Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is expanding its scientific expertise in the fields of data science and applied computer science within the framework of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. In this context, the new professorship should engage in the field of data science and applied AI in business, which offers diverse connections within the university, and participate in interdisciplinary collaborations, in particular within the JLU’s Center for Applied Computer and Data Science (ZAD).
Duties:
Your task is to represent the field of data science and applied AI in business in research and teaching with an application-oriented focus. The professorship is anchored in the field of business administration.
Your teaching load amounts to 8 teaching hours per week during the semester (SWS). The languages of instruction are German and English. The teaching load comprises teaching courses in the faculty’s bachelor’s and master’s programmes as well as the training of doctoral candidates (m/f/d). You will also contribute to the further development of the range of study programmes and engage in interdisciplinary degree programmes, in particular in the Business Information Systems programme planned in cooperation with JLU’s Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Geography. In this context, you will be primarily responsible for providing courses from the core field of business information systems.
In addition to fulfilling the teaching obligations and supervising student research projects, internship reports and final theses, your duties include research, knowledge transfer, participation in academic self-administration and the promotion of early-career researchers.
Your research in the field of data science and applied AI is internationally visible and competitive. It focuses on behavioural science research questions in economic and social contexts. In doing so, you apply modern methods from the fields of machine learning, natural language processing and causal modelling. A particular focus of your research activities lies on the analysis of unstructured data, in particular text, image and video data. Thematically, you will focus in particular on current challenges of digital societies, such as the analysis of digital public spheres and platforms in the context of social media as well as their impact on business and society.
Further success in independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects, preferably from the German Research Foundation (DFG) or the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), is expected. In this context, you are responsible for initiating and conducting (externally funded) research projects, also in cooperation with other professorships of the faculty or with other faculties of JLU.
Furthermore, you should participate in the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Business, Economics and Law (GGS). The professorship should contribute to the internationalisation of the faculty and of JLU by expanding international collaborations, participating in international research projects and integrating international perspectives into teaching.
The integration of gender and diversity aspects into research and teaching is desirable.
Requirements:
A completed university degree, an outstanding, thematically relevant doctorate and additional academic achievements (demonstrated, for example, by a habilitation or in the form of relevant peer-reviewed publications in the research field outlined above) in the field of data science and applied AI in business are required.
Success in the independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR) as well as pedagogical aptitude are also required. Your application must include evidence of successfully acquired externally funded projects managed by you, stating the funding institutions, project durations, total funding amounts and your own shares.
You have relevant teaching experience, preferably demonstrated by positive teaching evaluations. Willingness and ability to teach courses in German and English are required.
You also have an internationally visible research profile, documented in particular by high-ranking publications in nationally and internationally renowned journals as well as by participation in (inter)national conferences.
In addition, sound research experience in a non-German-speaking country is required.
Your clearly recognisable interdisciplinary research profile at the interface of business/economics and computer science is evidenced by relevant publications in both fields. The compatibility of your previous research with existing research activities of the faculty and with the ZAD is also required.
You also have experience in knowledge transfer, in particular in conducting transfer projects, developing and providing open-source software and supporting start-ups and spin-offs. Experience in presenting research results in national and international media is also required.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
